Skill at Arms is perhaps one of the most popular
lessons within the Army Cadet Force. From the very
start cadets are taught important lessons of safety
and respect of handling such equipment as the Number
8 Rifle and the L98A1 - Cadet GP (General Purpose)
and LSW (light support weapon)
Cadets are asked “what is the most dangerous
weapon” most would answer with an array of varying
types of guns and rifle makes. The correct answer is
‘the person holding it’ for if they are not
taught the safe handling of any ‘weapon’ and how
and where it should be used then of course it is a
danger.
Army
Cadets ARE
taught safe handling and any person or persons
failing to abide by these rules are taking very
seriously.
Skill
at Arms lessons not only involve teaching the safe
handling of rifles used within the ACF but also
‘Marksmanship Principles ie – how to hold the
rifle and the correct breathing, whilst aiming at
targets.
Testing
involving safety surrounding the rifles are taken by
cadets on a regular basis and NO cadet would be
allowed on a range unless they complied with all the
safety elements.
Equally so ALL adults must pass their Weapons
handling tests every 6 months, failure to pass their
tests would remove them from teaching the subject
until they had been retrained and retested.
More
information regarding the types of rifles used
within the ACF and their uses can be found on the
‘Shooting Page’ in the Youths – ‘what we
do’ section.
