Public
Relations Courses
PR
unfortunately for those that don’t necessarily
believe in its importance, is attached to
everything in the ACF. This is simply because to
get cadets into the detachments we need PR,
whether this is as simple as teaching a fun lesson
which will in turn get the cadets talking about
the ACF, or going out and putting up posters. The
Basic Course shows us the best way to go about
using PR to our advantage, explaining how to get
Reports in the newspapers and how a photograph can
really be a powerful tool and can make the
difference in either getting cadets into the
detachment or give the impression that the cadets
look bored to death and decreases the chances of
new recruits.

Adult
Instructors Course #456,
Cadet
Training
Centre
Frimley
Park,
Surrey
SI
Glen Kennedy gives us his account of what the
Adult instructors course entails at Frimley CTC.
"I
was quite apprehensive before the course and
really struggled to get into it properly, but
after 2 days I got right into it.
The course encourages teamwork and
coursemanship.
You are also forced to get on with new
people as you do not sleep in the same rooms as
anyone else from your own county.
We had people from as far away as Inverness
to the
Isle of Wight

| Report
on CFCB course held at Westbury 19-21st
October 2007.
2Lt
John Craig tells us the trials and tests that
adults undertake to become an officer.
"I
thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the CFCB and
found it to be personally challenging throughout
but I especially enjoyed the teamwork element,
especially being with other “like minded”
individuals who really pulled together as a group
with the intention of ensuring that everyone
within that group, had every opportunity to show
themselves at their best and as such, for everyone
to be successful. Similarly I found the Westbury
staff to be informative and supportive throughout
the “briefing” period of the weekend and very
fair minded throughout the testing elements."

Name: Paul Shaw
Age: 23
What did you get up to in cadets:
"I
tried to do as many activities as I could while I was a
cadet. I was very keen and was promoted to both L/Cpl
and Cpl on receiving my 1 star and 2 star respectively.
I was part of the county wide colts canter team and also
part of the iron dukes competition team during my time.
I left as a Cpl half way to my 3 star and with my Silver
DofE, first aid certificate, a 'green and keen' frame of
mind ready for the army and with a lot of friends"
What did you enjoy most in cadets?
"I enjoyed the competitions
and camps most of all. Annual camp was defiantly the
highlight of every year as you actually have enough time
to be able to do things properly. Field craft, drill,
live firing and the adventure training packages were
probably the best parts as these are the things that you
don't get to do on a day to day basis."
What have you done since cadets?
"I joined the army after
finishing at cadets at the age of 17. I had worked full
time for a year after leaving school as a web site
administrator and decided that after my time in the
cadets that the army was the way ahead for me. I have
now served 5 and a half years in the royal corps of
signals and am a lance corporal. I was a radio systems
operator, the guys that use the radios all day long on exercise
and get to play more of an infantry role depending on
where you are posted to. I served in Afghanistan while Ross
Kemp was out filming. I have since re-traded to be an
information systems engineer which is basically a
computer engineer and I now work at HQ Land Forces, the
HQ of the army in Wilton, Salisbury and now look after
the servers for the whole of the army's computer
systems."
