YACF
Hero - We will Remember
|
Ex
Cadet and serving soldier Rifleman Sheldon Steel,
from 5th Battalion The Rifles, was killed in
Helmand province, southern Afghanistan, on 27th
November 2011.
"Sheldon
was a truly remarkable cadet NCO and his
achievements are impressive but it’s his
exceptional personal qualities that set him so
high in people’s affection. His fellow cadets
many who were young recruits he trained, remember
him as a gentle giant who always had time for
everybody. A good natured guy who was the big
brother they could always turn to for help and
advice"

August
2011 - Compare & Contrast
|
As
public relations officer for Yorkshire (N & W)
Army Cadet Force and just returning from
Sennybridge Training Camp after 2 weeks annual
camp it has been quite surreal to have witnessed
youngsters aged 13 to 18 achieve so much and at
the same time watch in horror as many kids of a
similar age vented their anger within their
communities from a lack of ‘belonging’ and a
lack of belief of ‘self worth’

Where
there's a Will there's a Way!
|
During
Yorkshire North and West ACF’s recent Annual
Camp at (not so sunny) Sennybridge Training Area
there were the usual plethora of ‘Field training
Exercises’ for the
2 and 3 Star Training Cadres as well as the
‘Merlin Cadre’ which varied greatly in their
content, however the one ‘constant’ throughout
all of these was that of the role of the
‘Enemy’ which comprised of Officer Cadets from
Leeds University ‘Officer Training Corp’ lead
by YACF’s very own Lt Will Parker from A Company
also known as ‘Whispering Willy Parker’

How
great thou art !

Knowing
how important the Padre is to YACF a few months
ago (around April I believe) I asked if he would
be kind enough to put pen to paper and write a
little about his role and what it means to him to
be ‘our Padre’
He
was a little shy in doing so as his role is
carried out on a more hands on approach and can
obviously depend on individual needs but I’m
pleased to say that he was very kind in agreeing
to send this message out to you all and I hope you
all enjoy reading it as much as I did.

Keep
Calm and ‘Carry on Nurse’!
|
Back
in the comfort and warmth of my living room, and
having washed Sennybridge training area out of my
hair, its time to reflect on what is best
described as one very unique experience.
I
was asked by the County Public Relations Officer
to write an account of my journey and experience
of my first ever Army Cadet Force Annual camp,
indeed my first ever long stint of training.
Eight
days ago, feeling apprehensive and with nervous
excitement I set off for the highlight of the ACF
calendar, ‘Annual camp’ and thought Wales wont
know what’s hit it when I arrive!

Dickinson
is the ‘Real Deal’ in YACF’s Cadet of the
Year Competition 2011
|
Yorkshire North and West ACF’s ‘Cadet of the Year’ competition is
one of the most awaited, toughest and most sought
after ‘Titles’ in the cadet year and the 2011
competition at Sennybridge Training Area was no
exception. After Eight arduous days of training as
part of the ‘ Merlin’
(Senior Cadets) Training Cadre it was time
for two days of mental and physical competition to
find out who really was ‘the best of the
best!’

Army
Cadets ‘buddy
up’ with coHEARentvision.
|
Earlier this year Yorkshire
(N & W) Army Cadet Force were contacted by an
organisation called ‘coHEARentVision’ who
actively encourage people with a sensory loss such
as the deaf, hard of hearing, blind, partially
sighted and deaf/blind to reach their full
potential in every aspect of their lives; and
asked if there was a way of getting some of their
younger members aged between 10 and 19 involved
with some of the tasks and challenges the cadets
themselves undertake whilst training.

Jock
takes the high road
|
In
March 2011, Yorkshire (N & W) Army cadets and
adult staff said a very sad goodbye to one of its
much loved and formidable characters to have had
the pleasure of knowing.
John
Stewart, simply known as ’Jock’ for obvious
reasons was employed by ‘Sodexo’
providers of food services to schools,
prisons, army barracks etc and was the infamous
chef based at Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Strensall,
York.

Himalaya's
selection
|
The first bank
holiday in April and the Thursday afternoon at
6.15pm I’m heading off to Ripon with a bunch of
cadets from my company, to take part in the
initial selection weekend to be hand picked to go
to the Himalayas, while the cadets were going to
experience the trip from a cadet perspective I was
going to experience the trip as part of the adult
staff to accompany the expedition, but there would
be no special allowances I would have to do
exactly the same selection as the cadets would.

First
Aid – Regional Competitions
|
Many
people say that first aid in real life on a real
casualty is something completely different to the
things that you get taught as a cadet as you try
and stick to the structure you’ve been taught
but you inevitably have to end up relying on
common sense, but let me tell you competition
First aid as much as you know has been simulated
definitely falls into the same category as real
life.
You see the thing about first aid is no matter
how much you prepare and you train for each
scenario, you never know what your going to
expect, what’s going to be around the corner and
how gruesome it just may be,

Summer
Fun
|
A
week full of hard work and fun was on the agenda
for Yorkshire (N & W) Army cadets when over
200 kids packed up their troubles in their old kit
bags and smiled, smiled, smiled when journeyed to
Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Strensall, York for
‘Junior’ Annual Camp.
The
beautiful weather certainly kept the days training
bright and made for a very happy camp. The fun
didn’t stop there as trips to the sports centre
and with swimming and water slides on the agenda
the kids were loving their time away.

Q.)
Emergency, what service do you require?
A.)
F.A.W
|
How many of
us would know what to do if while we were at work
one of our colleagues or for those of us that work
with the general public injured themselves?
Would you
know what to do? Would you really be able to help,
or is it possible you could make things worse? The
First Aid at Work Course could ensure that doesn't
happen. We
adult members of the ACF are quite privileged to
experience this course at a fifth of the cost,
which would normally charge over £300.

Master
Cadet - McGee...asy Does it!
|
For
anyone under the illusion that the Master Cadet
course at Frimley Park is for Master Cadets,
they’re wrong. It makes Master Cadets!
Attending
the course were the UK's leading cadets, however
it wasn't until the final day where we truly
achieved that title. I believe I speak for all of
the cadets on the course when I say that our
knowledge was advanced and our skills perfected
during the week.
