has his future ‘all mapped out”

Corporal James Harrison of Strensall Detachment (B
Company) Yorkshire North and West ACF has his
future all mapped out for him and all thanks to
his experiences in the ACF. James has just been
told that he has been awarded an ‘Army
Scholarship’ which means that he will be
‘sponsored’ by The Army throughout his two
years at ‘Joseph Rowntree Sixth Form College’
in New Earswick, York and then whilst he is
studying at University, he is hoping to be
accepted at The University of Northumbria where he
is planning to study either ‘International
Relations’ or ‘War Studies.’

B COMPANY RECRUITING AT GREAT YORKSHIRE
SHOW
|
‘B’ Company recruiting & display team attended
the 2010 Great Yorkshire Show for the 7th
year running with the aim of promoting the Army
Cadet Force and raising money for the Army
Benevolent Fund which is the companies nominated
charity for 2010.
This year the Great Yorkshire Show attracted in
excess of 130,000 visitors, the Show is the
North's leading agricultural event and takes
place over three days during July on the
250-acre showground on the edge of the spa town
of Harrogate.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION ANNUAL PARADE
CADET INVITATION
|
Cadets from Fulford &
Strensall Detachments B Company as well as other
cadet contingents was invited to attend the
Annual RBL Parade in York to celebrate and mark
the 150 years of the cadet movement
Cadets formed
up at Parliament Street and paraded the B
Company ACF standard Cadet Cpl David Mulligan
as Standard Bearer.
The parade marched off from St Sampson square to
all saints Church

A RIGHT ROYAL SALUTE
|
B Company as well as other
cadet contingents was for the first time
involved in the 21 Gun Royal Salute for her
Majesty The Queens Official Birthday at the
museum gardens this year as part of the
celebrations of the Cadet 150.
Lt Jon Holmes led B Company
cadets as well as cadet collectors for the Army
Benevolent Fund.

Cadets have hidden
talents
|
Lending your beret to a Medieval Knight, being
used as a jump on a Bicycle Motor-cross (BMX)
course and Lne Dancing, three things you don’t
expect to do as a cadet but alre all in a days
work when Cadets of Woodlesford detachment have
helped to support the Rothwell May Day
celebrations in Leeds.
For the past 6 years the detachment has helped
make these events a success by supporting and
helping establish the showground and displays.

Running the
Mile – For Sport Relief
|
Detachment Commander Sgt Gavin Coe put an idea
to his detachment and began co-ordinating his
involvement for Sport Relief 2010.
Sgt
Gavin organised a mile run and having picked the
location he wanted to open the venue up to
others, so he advertised for B Company adult
participation, in order to raise more money for
the charity through sponsorship; with net access
and local sponsorship the event certainly proved
popular to some.

Cadets Raise Cash towards Little Jamie's Life Saving
Treatment
|
B Company was contacted by
Marianna Proetti who has 3 daughters in the Army
cadets and asked if we could assist in raising
funds for Jamie Inglis through bag packing at
Tesco Supermarket Askham Bar.
Jamie Inglis is a 4 year old
boy who is suffering from a rare form of cancer
and his family have to raise £250, 0000 by the
end of February so Jamie can have life saving
treatment in America. We were happy to assist
and the call went out to the York detachments
for volunteers.

Merchant Adventurers Tankard
|
Cadet Cpl Emma Forster aged
17 from Harrogate Detachment B Company ACF who
was nominated by her Detachment Commander Sgt
Paul Ward, was one of six recipients who were
awarded the Merchant Adventurers Tankard at the
prestigious ceremony hosted by the Merchant
Governors in York.
The Tankard and Citation was
awarded for outstanding achievement and
commitment to her detachment, company and the
Army Cadet Force as well as the community work
and charity events that Emma is involved in.

Coy show what they are made of!
|
‘B’ Company Army Cadet Force
based at Duncombe Barracks recently gained two
new qualified adults and two new Senior Cadet
Instructors, all having successfully completing
a week’s course at Queen Elizabeth Barracks
Strensall run by the Army’s ‘9 Cadet Training
Team’.
Sgt Roger Taylor, Sgt Laura
Porter, Cadet C/Sgt Helen Yeoman Cadet Sgt Lee
McCaulay who were students on their respective
course endured hard training, covering subjects
such as Navigation Skills, Military Skills
including Weapon Handling, Drill, Field-Craft,
Leadership and Instructional skills.

HARROGATE CADETS MIGHTY CHALLENGE
|
Harrogate Detachment has set
them-selves a mighty challenge to raise funds
for a local charity St Michaels Hospice.
Detachment Commander Sgt Paul Ward said “We have
finally got the challenge moving after several
attempts and the cadets are very enthusiastic to
complete this endurance activity. We have set
ourselves is to row the distance from Japan to
San Francisco 5,100 nautical miles on the
concept 2 indoor rowing machine, this equates to
nearly 9.5 million metres.

Newly appointed Lumley
Detachment Commander SMI Adie Stevens presented
his first cadet achievers at detachment recently
the award were for Best New recruit, Cadet of
the year, Cadet NCO of the year.
The criteria for gaining each
achievement is dependant on several qualities
and abilities including:-Turnout, Attendance,
Self - Discipline, Leadership Qualities,
Assistance at Detachment, Willingness to learn,
Attendance on camps, Subject Passes, Team work,
Communication Skills.

B Company Cadets attend 63rd
Airborne Marches Holland on the 65th
Anniversary of Operation Market Garden
|
Cadets from B Company in
there sixth year joined cadet forces, soldiers
and civilians across Europe and the UK in the 63rd
Airborne March Oosterbeek Arnhem 2009 the
largest one day march in the world. This year
was the 65th Anniversary of Operation
Market Garden.
Operation Market Garden 17-25th
Sept 1944 was suppose to pave the way for the
capture of the Ruhr, the German Industrial
Heartland by striking a decisive blow that would
bring the war in Europe to an end by Christmas
1944.

CADETS COMMUNITY WORK RECOGNISED

This week army cadets from
Strensall detachment, ‘B’ Company celebrated
becoming affiliated with the Royal British
Legion with a prestigious ceremony held at Queen
Elizabeth Barracks
Cadets from Strensall were
honoured to receive the certificate of
affiliation from the RBL having participated
over several years with various charity work and
appeals run by the RBL. The special occasion was
watched by proud parents and legion members.

Busy B’s raise money for Help For Heroes
|
Since the Annual Camp of Yorkshire North & West
Army Cadet Force at Wathgill in August 2008
cadets from ‘B’ Company have certainly lived up
to their Company logo by being busy little Bee’s
raising funds for the Help the Heroes Charity.
In the 5 months since camp the cadets have
collected a staggering £1,467.08 by packing bags
for busy shoppers, street collections and
sponsorship.

B Company cadets Supporting Our Soldiers Abroad
|
Cadets from B Company were given a challenge to
pack 60 boxes to send to troops abroad for
Christmas and they achieved this at their final
weekend camp for 2008 in Queen Elizabeth
Barracks Strensall.
Rebecca Burns the local co-ordinator for Support
Our Soldiers Charity attended the event and
provided shoe boxes for cadets to fill with as
many gifts as possible.

Mess Manager 4 Yorks) which is part of the TA100
events this year.

Cadet
of the Year Competition
|
While
the company was in 5th place it was
apparent that the future for our young team is in
good hands and things should certainly improve in
2009.
The cadets and adults put maximum effort into all
the events at the weekend and unfortunately only
succeeded in gaining a second place in First
–Aid however the overall team is to be
congratulated at such short notice and taking part
for some a very new experience.

Detachment
Commander CSM Mel Dawkins after many arduous hours
was honoured and proud to be involved in the
affiliation parade that took place on Monday
evening at Lumley Detachment.
The
event was well attended by the Royal British
Legion President Mr Ted Griffiths, Vice President
Denise Edgar, Chairman John Lebbon as well as
Branch Secretary Bob Burrows who was liaison for
the event and other members of the RBL York
Branch.

Almost
a Hat trick for B Coy at County First Aid Competition.
|
Cadets
from Strensall and Selby detachment took part in
the
County
First Aid
competition on Saturday 10th May 2008
at Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Strensall and
competed against 12 other teams from across the
county.
The
two B Company teams came first and third with
Strensall A team as overall winners, E Company from
Wakefield
picked up second place and Selby B team coming
third place.
